My work explores the interconnectedness of humans, flora, and fauna through a visual language that merges perceptible similarities—both seen and metaphysical. By evoking familiarity in form, I’m aiming to stir memories and provoke a visceral response. For instance, a plant may recall a human figure, or a familiar moment, prompting reflections on personal connections and identities.
Central to my practice is nurturing a profound connection with the natural world, where plants become my teachers and messengers. I continuously draw parallels between their teachings and my life experiences, past and present. Through a blend of watercolor, acrylic, drawing, digital art, and my own plant photography as reference, I delve into natural forms and moments as metaphors for human growth, healing, and transcendence.
This series began on a walk in San Francisco, where I collected some tree bark. The pieces had a pattern on them that was so intricate and beautiful - full of movement.
I decided to take them back to my studio in Los Angeles and with them I made a series of prints on watercolor paper. Working with these natural objects gave me the freedom to be less controlled and more abstract in my approach.
Following the movement of the bark I added watercolor and acrylic glazes as well as some marks inspired by plant patterns. I ended up with pieces that resemble abstracted maps.
These finished works represent to me our futile human drive to assert ourselves over nature and the consequences our actions may bring.
